Nothing to show

I have finished two projects today. The scarf for Astrid is done but I'm not totally pleased with it. There are things that I wish I had done differently so i will try and make another one.

I've also finished a sew-along that I'm doing with my cousin - a dress for Astrid. Well, I say a dress but it is more of a tunic really on her. But looks cool with a pair of jeans.

Will post pictures later. I have to wait till the light is a bit better. (This being Glasgow, that might take some time!)

Christmas Presents pt 1

Look what I made for my husband using this tutorial (mostly). As always I do a search and then read a lot of different pages and look at many pictures and what comes out of it is probably some amalgamation of everything. And since I usually don't have the computer on when I craft I have a tendency to go fairly gung ho with it (for better or worse). Sometimes I consult one of my craft books but not as often as I should.

Anyway, christmas presents to the husband is notoriously difficult. He has a very special taste and generally gets the things he wants anyway. Or gets them and then forgets that he has gotten them and gets them again.

But I knew that he needed a cover for his bike seat so I went with that.

I didn't copy the bike seat that well - it was covered with a plastic bag at the moment so that didn't help and I had to do it quick so he wouldn't notice me doing it - so the fitting is a bit off. Also the vinyl that I chose to make it in (because I had it at home) is a bit stiff and not so easy to make fit. But it works.

And he's getting a new bike in the spring anyway...

Fann den intressant inte pga det faktum att det är "män som stickar" (manliga designers är ju legio) utan för att det visar på en djupare revolution - nämligen det att tanken att man kan skapa själv sprider sig! En motreaktion till kapitalismen kanske. För det är en annan känsla att skapa själv - att ge sig själv den tiden - än att köpa.

That is some wedding-going-ons. The University has its own chapel and if you have been a student here you can get married there.

But then again, you can't really swing a cat here without hitting at least one gothic looking building. Usually transformed into a pub.

And that makes up for any lack of kitchen ceiling...

So you take the decision and make all the arrangement. Take the cats to the vets (repeatedly), spend all your money on rabies shots (for the cats not yourself) and anticipate them freaking out completely over having to go by plane all by themselves to Manchester and then - as if that wasn't enough - having to go in a car with cat-killer-and-by-the-way-we-know-you-are-evil Hugh for long hours just to get to a complete strange place that isn't even their final destination.

You spend weeks sorting out and packing your stuff, throw away most of your possessions, use up all of your friends loyalty by asking favour after favour and still don't really make it. Because you have promised the next tennant to move in early you end up stressing out no end because you realise very late on that you will not be able to clean out the flat in the way you had imagined you would.

(Then you spend some time seething because the next tennant is throwing a total wobbler and acting as if she had the right to get in there early)

But then you get on the plane and the weather is lovely and you spot all the members of Primal Scream on the airport thinking that this must be a good omen.

Your loved one picks you up at the airport and just as you enter Scotland the sun is setting and you get that wonderful relaxed feeling in your stomach as you always do when in Glasgow. Aaaah.

Then you get up one morning and open the kitchen door and it looks like this.

Because - as you look closer - there is one big whopping hole in your ceiling!

Luckily, you don't have to clean it up yourself.

Aaah, life in Glasgow. Don't you just love it!

What good light and a macro setting can do...

Yesterday at 5 o'clock the sun shining into my living room caught my eye and I took some pictures of ordinary household object in a macro setting. I like the way they sort of take on a whole new meaning - seeing them so much up close - and turning ornamental rather than functional. If that makes any sense...

I want to change this page layout to have three columns rather than two - having the slightly more static elements on one side and the changing ones on the other. The way it is at the moment makes the page a bit loopsided. You sort of have to scroll down far beneath the blog text element to get to the end of the archives/links/etc elements. It's just not estetically pleasing.

So how do I go about doing this - well, there are tutorials out there (this one for example) but it entails doing some of your own coding. And that feels a bit daunting. Well, actually it is more copying coding but still...

It comes down to this - is my displeasement with the layout bigger than my fear of me messing up the blog and not being able to correcting it later if I have to?

Shiny things

Have been playing with resin again. Made some test samples yesterday and it didn't turn out half bad if I may say so myself! Have to make some small adjustments - to make them even more shinier - before turning them into jewelry though.

Found some YouTube clips about resin that was really good to watch - since I'm a bit on my own here (well, not counting all the folks on Crafsters resin board I ask questions to...). Sometimes you just have to watch how things are being done rather than only reading about it.

Unfortenately, the americans seem to be using quite different brands of resin than I. For example, in many videos they were mixing and handling the resin without a mask - I tried that the first time and had a killer headache for three days... And that makes me wonder if that was only for the benefit of the camera or if it - oh, joy of joys - really exists "fume free" resin?

If anyone knows please drop me a line...

It then took me 2,5 hours to upload and manage the rest. Puh! But since I was beginnig to doubt if I would ever be able to update anything at all after being sooooo way behind at one o'clock I think I did okey!

Will be doing absolutely nothing at all for the rest of the day now, methinks.

Softies Central has announced its 2nd Annual Softie Awards. Last years entries were absoulutely stunning and I can't wait to see what people come up with this year!

There are five categories: Picnic food, elephant tribute (did you know that the first ever softie was an elephant), cutest face, pink or plaid and embroidered to death and the contest closes on april 18.

I have an idea for the embroidered to death-category. Will see if I get a chance to finish it before the closing date.

A yellow purse

So I had this piece of scrap yarn that I wanted to do something of and made it into a purse. Well, first I didn't know that I was doing a purse I just started with crochetting a rectangle. As part of a stashbusting move (yeah, how's that going? I can hear DBF ask in a rather sarcastical voice far away in Maryhill) since I'm about to move in the summer.

Did some projects from Amy Karol's wonderful book Bend-the-rules sewing and got over my fear of using zippers (a fear thet turned out to be easier to overcome than my fear of the BIAS TAPE. See post bellow. And more to come...). So I decided I needed more zippers (hmm, the stashbusting you ask? Well, at the moment it is more of a one-step-forward-five-steps-back-kind-of-thing. I'm working on it okey!) and picked up some for cheap at the local thrift shop. (Because zippers - it turns out - is not so cheap to buy on the new as you would think).

And do you know what - one of those zippers matched the crochetted rectangle I had made of my lovely yarn perfectly! Coincidence - I think not... More like divine intervention telling me that I did the right thing buying those zippers after all!

So add zipper to crochetted rectangle, stitch them all together and then add resincoated picture of baby Kelvin with crochetted flower and, hey presto, you have got yourself yet another Kelvinrelated present for your cousin. Well, my cousin actually.

Planning to post a tutorial on crochetted purses sometime in the future*.

Forgive me of my absence but as the rather drastic headline suggests My Loved One has been to see me for ten glorious days (and now gone back home to Glasgow). And that means no time for blogging. Priorities, my dears, priorities.

The man is good for me though for with him in the room I get more done and feel less intimidated of trying new things. It has been a good week for crafting - I even conquered my fear of using bias tape.

Soooo, my dream of trying to start a little something of my own businesswise has been rekindled and work is now in progress for that to happen. Watch this space for more!

Yesterday my cousin finally received her birthday presents - her birthday is in january(...) - so now I am free to post the pictures here. I have been reading a lot about resin on Crafster and seeing all the wonderful things that other people have done with resin made me want to try it too. For a long while I had the idea of making my cousin a bracelet with pictures of her son Kelvin. My first idea was to make it with laminated pictures but then I realised that resin was the way to go. So this is what I did. And am quite darned pleased with it too for a first try!

A sweater for a little one

This is a sweater that I made from a book by Erika Knight. The swedish title is "Stickat och sött" (unfortunately the english title isn't printed in the book). It is in fact the first real garment that I have knitted (scarfs, mittens, socks and headwear doesn't count...) so YAY! me. I had the hardest time understanding the instructions though and I will blame the translation before I blame my lacking skills in reading knitting instructions. But I prevailed despite sometimes not knowing at all what the hell it was that I was supposed to do knittingwise and made things up as I went - thinking that it at least will turn into something approximating a sweater even if I didn't do every thing exactly correct. And I think it did so hurray for prevailing!

Quick and easy Christmas presents: Ornament Octupuses

What says Christmas more than a tree decorated with some creatures from the sea? Let me intruduce you to Jeremy:

This is how you make them:

What kind of size hook you need is dependent on what kind of yarn you want to use. That in turn determines the size of the finished octupus (duh). Guage is - in other words - not so important.

Body:

Rnd 1: chain 2, sc 6 in the second st from the hook (6 sts)

Rnd 2: sc 2 in every st (12 sts)

Rnd 3: *sc 1 st, sc 2 in next st* around (18 sts)

Rnd 4-9: sc around (18 sts)

Rnd 10: *sc 1 st, sc2tog* around (12 sts) (Now will be a good time to stuff the octupus)

Rnd 11: *sc2tog* around

Pull yarn through to close and leave a tail long enough to fasten the tentacles with.

Tentacles:

Make 4

ch 8 cut yarn and fasten.

Assembly:

Place the tentacles in a X-shape to the bottom of the octupus (thus forming 8 tentacles) and sew unto the body. I have used beads for the eyes and emroidery floss for the mouth.

Now go decorate that tree!

Climate change

Yes, I, too, have heard about global warming and the changes to the climate it has brought about but imagine my surprise when, as I was tending to my plants, I came across this little fella!

Not only was the season wrong but, surely, Sweden is not the right habitat for such a species?

Puzzled I watched as the diminutive creature first came closer as if to check me out and then, after he had deemed me harmless, started to play in the nearest flowerpot.

Mesmerized I observed his careless play and just as I had recovered from the chock of seeing him there I realised he wasn't alone! Another, equally out of place, friend had joined him in taking up residence in the same flowerpot - seemingly just as happy as if she really belonged there.

I didn't know what to do! Could they stay where they were? They seemed quite content eventhough there were dangers.

But would they be safer if they were sent away? And as I looked into their warm green eyes and smiling faces I just knew - they were here to stay...

Quick and easy Christmas presents: A starshaped potholder!

Potholders - you really can't have too many of them! Make some for yourself or give them away as a Christmas present. They are very quick and easy to make. This is how:

1. Since I haven't figured out how to put pdfs on my blog I will have to describe how to make the template instead of actually providing you with it. Well - no worries - it is fairly easy to make. Start with drawing a 35 cm long straight line on a piece of paper. If you are using ordinary A4sized paper you will have to use 2 bits of paper for the template to fit. From one end of the drawn line measure a 40 degree angle and draw another line from it also 35 cm long. Measure another 40 degree angle from that end of the line and draw yet another line 35 cm long. Repeat until you closed the shape and thus made a star. Easy, wasn't it!?! Now draw another star exactly the same as the first and cut them out. Then cut one of the stars in two and add 1,5 cm seam allowance to the side you cut. Then you should have something like this:

2. Still with me? Good! Now using your carefully made template cut 2 pieces of the star from a fabric of your choice (but please keep in mind that you are making potholders so stay away from fabric that might actually melt if it comes in contact with hot stuff (now that is just ol' common sense but I don't want to end up being sued by somebody)). So stick to natural fibers please! Then cut 2 pieces of the half star from the same fabric (or different one if that is what you fancy but bear in mind that these are the outer pieces of the potholder and will show). When all that cutting have been done you still can't put your scissors away because you will need some kind of lining for inside the potholder so that the heat don't travel through. Again - and you probably can't overstate this - do not line the potholder with fabric that says "Keep away from fire" or "100 % polyester" because that would be a BAD choice of fabric. Wool- on the other hand - is a GOOD choice of fabric because it doesn't burn that easy and if it does catch on fire it puts itself out. Magic! So anyway, cutting - cut another starshape out of a fabric suitable for lining. Now you should have this:

3. Right, boring part over, time for acctual sewing. Start with the 2 half shapes. Fold the side parts twice (if you use an iron this is quite easily made) and sew a straight stich. Just like this.

4. Assemble all your starbits from bottom up like thus: lining fabric, full starshape, the 2 halfshapes with the wrong side up, and, finally, another full starshape on top. Pin the layers together.

5. With a straight stich sew all sides together except for a wee bit for turning the pot holder right side out. Don't forget to reinforce your stiches in the start and end by going backwards and forwards a bit. Cut as close to the stiching that you can and/or dare in order for it to get as good shape as possible when you turn it the right way out.

6. Turn pot holder right side out. You can use the back end of a pen or a brush to poke the "arms" of the star through.

7. Stich the open bit that you used for turning the pot holder right side together.

DONE!
Now let's start cooking...

I got intrigued by the lights because in winter on my walk home they are not there to give light but more to act as beacons - a way for me to navigate through the dark by following a trail of shiny buttons. It seemed to me that instead of giving light they only accentuated the dark.

This is a bit of an experiment but lately I haven't been able to shake off the thought that maybe having a blog named Tallberg goes Int requires it being read, well, internationally. And maybe this necessitates it being written in, well, not swedish. So I should do it in english. This, however, pose as a problem in that I, naturally, do not posses the same knowledge of that language as my mother tongue. For instance, my DBF waited six months to point out to me that the plural of sheep is not sheeps. When I asked him why he hadn't said anything earlier he said it was because he thought it was "cute".

Anyway I will give it a try and see how it goes. Maybe my english will improve by it...

And since I don't exactly write everyday (completely missed this) it probably won't be too daunting. Mind you, seems like I'm not the only one as all my friends with blogs seem to have been sucked inte the black empty vortex that is Facebook Hell.

Totally unrelated - found out whilst cruising my local supermarket that 14 november was cheesecake day. For those of you who understand swedish here is more on a related subject.

Humle och Dumle, Tödde och Mödde, eller, som det står i deras nya pass - Lillasyster och Storasyster (kära barn går under många namn - Scaredy och Feisty är deras engelska namn, men jag tror att de tror att de heter "slutameddetdär") har nu blivit microchippade och fått sin första rabiesstruta och vi kan nu alla tre pusta ut lite tills börja av december då det är dags för blodprov. Fantastiska Johan och Kristiina lånade mig sin bil och allt gick över förväntan bra.

Jag har också lyckats komma förbi kreditkortskollen på Etsy och har äntligen registrerat le shoppe. Ingenting ligger uppe än för försäljning men jag jobbar på med lite ,än så länge, halvhemliga saker. Som det här:

Så är då beslutet taget: jag flyttar till Glasgow och hjärtevännen i månadsskiftet april/maj. Så nu ska katter vaccineras, lägenheten sägas upp och väskor packas. Då är det skönt att veta att det finns lite tid att spela på.

Iiiiiiiiiii! Det känns jättehärligt.

Jag och Hugh har redan spanat in en kurs i screenprinting som vi ska ta - NÄR JAG FLYTTAR DIT. I slutet av april.

Jag glömde väl inte bort att säga att jag flyttar till Glasgow i månadsskiftet april/maj....

Idag verkar vara dagen för världen att visa sin solidaritet med Burmas folk mot militärregimen. Uppmaningar om att klä sig i rött har landat i min mobil ett antal gånger och manifestationer planeras på olika ställen.

Själv skulle jag vilja uppmana folk att följa Amnesty Internationals exempel med att skicka ett vykort med blommor på till generalen Than Shwe.

Mera saker till Kelvin

Okey, så det enda jag bloggar om - när jag bloggar- är Kelvin men ändå! Jag ber om ursäkt att jag inte uppdaterat så regelbundet på senaste tiden men a) hjärtevännen är här (även om han mest har näsan i den Harry Potter-bok han för tillfälligt läser. Han har nämligen inte läst dem förut. Men nu ska han läsa alla. I en rad. Mig pratar han bara med då han undrar om jag fått någon reservationsmeddelande från biblioteket (nää, nu överdrev jag lite)). B) samme hjärtevän fyller år om ca en vecka och födelsedagsskapandet är i full sving. Men allt måste ju göras i hemlighet så det är lite tidskrävande att smussla med allt - min symaskin är ju varken osynlig eller ljudlös. Och icket heller bor jag i ett hus... Och c) Kelvin måste ju ha mössor och sockar och onesizes med får på...

Det är inte en stilla stund på dygnet! Ärligt!

Glasgow ToR

Har varit en kortis i staden över alla andra städer - Glasgow. På schemat fanns en konsert med Os mutantes och en resa till Kelburn castle för att se graffitti utsmyckningarna där. Lyckades också halka in på en konsert med Guilded angels - ett lokalt countryband och en "sighting" av en original Banksy utsmyckning. Bilder kommer!

Kusinen Ulrika i Glasgow ska snart ha sitt första barn så jag passade på att lämna över lite grejer som jag gjort nu då jag var där och besökte! Bäbisar rockar!

Saker jag tycker om, del 3: Åsa Linderborgs texter

Har läst Åsa Linderborgs fantastiska bok Mig äger ingen i dagarna (den finns på BIBLIOTOKET) och kan inte annat än att stämma in i hyllningskörerna. Det är en bok där språket gör allt för att underlätta läsupplevelsen. Det bara glider och sätter allt sitt fokus på berättelsen. Det krumbuktar sig inte och gör sig till. Ett enkelt språk för en enkel man. (Och då menar jag förstås enkelt språk i betydelsen ”rent” och enkel man i betydelsen ”från arbetarklass”.)

Det är ju berättelsen som har huvudrollen – som på en och samma gång skildrar en stad, en pappa och en dotter, människorna som de har runt sig, och en tidsepok. Och gör det naket och ömsint och, faktiskt, med stor stolthet över både människorna och deras historia.

De sista kapitlena läser jag med tårarna strömmande. Men jag gråter inte för Leif Boris Andersson utan jag gråter över min morbror Torsten Pålsson som i trettioårsåldern inte orkar mer utan tar livet av sig trots sina två barn. Jag gråter över min moster Britta Hörnell som pga sitt läshuvud lyckades avancera till positionen skeppsklarerare bara för att något år efter att hon gått i pension dö i magcancer. En cancer som läkarna i år kallat för glutenallergi – vad var det för nytta att lägga tid på att undersöka en överviktig och kedjerökande kärring som dessutom egentligen bara var underklass. Jag gråter över alla de alkoholiserade trashankarna som kantar min släktkrönika. Men främst gråter jag över min mamma och pappa som trots att de jobbat hårt hela sitt liv inte fick något ut av det förutom trasiga hjärnor och slitna kroppar.

Utan att gå in i någon sorts ”socialistisk adelskalender” så får man ändå en förklaring till Åsa Linderborgs skärpa och engagemang i de texter som har publicerats när man vet hennes bakgrund för hon skriver om det hon vet och själv har upplevt. När media gör sitt bästa med att hålla oss förvirrade med att tvångsmata oss med berättelser om arvtagerskor till mångmiljonärer är det skönt att Åsa Linderborg finns. Som en motvikt.

Saker jag tycker om, del 2: Pyssel

Pyssel är nog en av de roligaste saker jag vet! Det är så otroligt tillfredsställande att se någonting konkret växa fram – även om det ofta blir lite skevt och buckligt och kanske inte alls så som man tänkt från början. Jag tror på pyssel som en motkraft till kapitalismen som säger att den stora massan ska vara passiva konsumenter och det är bara förunnat få att vara kreativa. Jag tror att motgiftet mot konsumismen är att våga skapa själv. Jag tror på pyssel som ett steg till revolutionen! Leve pysslandet!

Saker jag tycker om, del 1: Bibliotek

Av någon anledning så är det lättare att skriva om saker jag ogillar än saker jag gillar vilket gärna gör att blogg och dess författare framstår som aningen kverulant. Detta vill jag nu ändra på genom en serie om saker som jag faktiskt gillar. Lite grann som Lena Sundströms bok ”Saker jag inte förstår och människor som jag inte tycker om” fast, eh, tvärtom. (Lena Sundström tycker jag om). Eller som Christian ”din foliehatt i mediebruset” Schremsers ”Folk är idioter”-pris men, eh, på ett positivt sätt.

Därför presenterar jag nu - Saker jag tycker om, del 1:
Bibliotek
Förutom det faktum att vem som helst, fattig eller rik, kan ta del av böcker av vitt skilda karaktärer – kriminalromaner, poesi, faktaböcker, comics osv så finns där också musik och noter, video- och DVD-filmer, för att inte glömma multimedia. Och allt för ingen penning alls. Helt gratis! Det är ju fantastiskt. Därför instiftar jag nu ett pris till världens bästa uppfinning, involverande en byggnad och böcker som kan lånas gratis, i Nobels anda och ger det till – BIBLIOTEKEN!

Glasgow höll en jazzfestival vid mitt besök. Vi var och lyssnade till Dr Robert Beckford som öppnade festivalen med ett föredrag. Det var gratis. På lördagen gick vi på jazzpub där jag tog bilder. Det var också gratis. Notice the pattern here...

Norges regering har beslutat att betala ut runt 70 miljoner kronor i löner till palestinska civila tjänstemän.

– Vi hoppas att vårt bidrag ska bidra till att den sociala kris som palestinierna nu upplever minskas, särskilt för stora palestinska familjer med en försörjare, kommenterar utrikesminister Jonas Gahr Störe.

Återigen visar Norges regering handlingskraft och en vilja att vara sin ideologi trogen, både hemma och globalt. Det ger hopp för framtiden!
